Who is entitled to a Travel Card?

You will be entitled to a Travel Card if you are a resident of the Highland Council area and:
1 you are aged 60 or over
OR
2 you are profoundly deaf
OR
3 you are or would be disqualified from holding a driving licence on medical grounds
OR
4 you have a permanent disability which seriously impairs your ability to walk
OR
5 you suffer from a mental disorder within the meaning of the Mental Health (Scotland) Act 1984.

LOST CARDS

DISABLED PERSONS (2 to 5 above)
To obtain a Certificate of Eligibility from your local Social Work Office, apply either in person or by letter. Proof of your disability such as a medical certificate may be requested.

If you need help when travelling by public transport you may be eligible for a Companion Card entitling your travelling companion to travel free or at half fare. Ask for details at your local Social Work Office or Council Service Point.

Your local Social Work Office or Council Service Point will be able to advise you if you have any queries about those aspects of the scheme.

How to get your Travel Card: Apply at any Post Office, Sub-Post Office, Council Service Point or Library in Highland. Take with you:
· Proof that you are resident of Highland.
· A recent passport sized photograph of yourself.
· EITHER proof of age (if applying as a Senior Citizen)
OR A Certificate of Eligibility from your local Social Work Area Office (if applying as a disabled person).

Please note that an expired card is not acceptable as proof of eligibility for a new card.

The card is valid for five years from the date of issue.

LOST CARDS
If you lose your Travel Card a replacement may be obtained from any Post Office, Council Service Point or Library on providing proof of eligibility.

The Travel Card enables the holder to purchase half price tickets as follows:

For journeys where day return or period return fares exist, these are also available at half price to Travel Card holders.

Single, Saver, Supersaver and Cheap Day Return tickets at half the normal fare on scheduled train services within Highland.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
Your Travel Card must always be presented when attempting to travel.

TRAVEL CARDS DO NOT ENTITLE HOLDERS TO REDUCED RATES FOR CARS OR CYCLES ON TRAIN OR FERRY SERVICES.

VISUALLY HANDICAPPED TRAVEL CARD

A Scotland wide scheme has been introduced for the visually handicapped which will allow free travel throughout Scotland.

Applicants should contact the Highland Society for the Blind, 38 Ardconnel Street, Inverness for their card.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

1. The card can only be used by the person whose name and photograph appear on the card.

2. The card is valid until 30 November 2007.

3. The travel card entitles the user to travel free of charge, standard class, within Scotland, on services of all participating bus, rail, ferry and underground operators.

4. Loss of the card must be reported at once to: TEC Services, Highland Council, Glenurquhart Road, Inverness, IV3 5NX

5. Companion Card - The National Scheme does not include a companion card. However the Highland Council companion card will be valid with the National card to destinations covered by the Council scheme, i.e. within Highland Council boundaries and along the routes to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Oban. Presentation of the Companion Card allows the holder to be accompanied by a helper free of charge.

ScotRail and Shiel Buses have introduced integrated ticketing on the Mallaig to Fort William rail route, which will allow local residents who own Highland Rail Cards or Highland Travel Cards to travel from Mallaig, Morar, Arisaig or Beasdale to Fort William by bus and return by train or vice versa.
